CONTROL OF OYSTERS

Demand Ahead Of Supply (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 20. The present Marine Department control of Foveaux Strait oyster supplies was against the public interest, the direct of Skeggs Fisheries. Ltd., Mr C. G Skeggs, told the Parliamentary Committee inquiry today The public demand for oysters throughout New Zealand far exceeded the present supply, said Mr Skeggs In spite of this, the distributors with their “vested monopoly” did not appear interested in expanding their catches.

"During prolonged spells of fine weather the boats are put on limits and crew members’ earnings are reduced,” he said. “The fisherman has no incentive to work hard as he is allowed to land only a limited catch each day.” There was no free competition among the three concerns controlling all oysters taken from Foveaux Strait, said Mr Skeggs.
