5 DROWNED IN MAY

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 19. Last month five people were drowned, three fewer than in May, 1981, says the National Water Safety Committee’s monthly survey. One man was swept from a horse while trying to cross a flooded river, and a woman was found drowned in a harbour. Another man drowned when a small boat capsized in heavy seas. A small boy drowned in a drain near his home and another when crossing a creek. “The drowning of the small boy emphasises that water hazards around the home threaten small children at all times,” said the secretary of the committee (Mr S. V. Higgins). "If all water hazards around the home cannot be fenced off, small children should play only in an enclosed yard. They should not even be let stray out of sight; someone may have forgetfully left open the gate to danger,” he said.
