DRAINAGE BOARD RATES

Request To Local

Bodies

The Christchurch Drainage Board wants more prompt payment of its rates, which are collected for it by the territorial local bodies in the board’s district. The finance committee reported to the board that the board’s act provided for monthly payments of rates. This had never been adhered to strictly by any of the authorities, the committee said, and it would be unreasonable to insist on monthly payment during the period, say, April to October, as only a comparatively small proportion of rates was paid in that period. “From about November onwards, however, there is an increasing amount paid to the territorial authorities and there has been a tendency lately for some authorities to be slow with their payment after Christinas. This is during the period when the board incurs fairly heavy charges for interest on overdraft.”
