Children’s Rights

Sir—“ Today’s Kiwi" says a future generation will criticise my efforts to improve the world. That’s as it should be. Did “Today’s Kiwi” make use of his talent or did he wrap it in a napkin? “Boadicea’s” letter shows her fear of ridicule. There lies the root of my case. History teaches that youth is revolutionary— exhibitionist. “Boadicea” calls it—but does not start wars. Adults start wars With stubborn unyielding I’m-right-you’re-wrong attitudes, fearing loss of face and ridicule if they give in. Imagine a community of fully-grown adults with no youth to deride its cherished and pompous decisions. Youth has no vote and few means of public expression Some seek only destruction of the establishment, and the Borstals fill. Others attempt constructive thought. Security is the opium of the people.—Yours, etc., TOMORROW’S KIWI. June 17, 1962.
