Award Against Newspaper

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. June 15.

A jury in the Supreme Court at Auckland today awarded William Henry Bates, a Raglan county councillor. damage* of £375 in a libel action against the “Raglan County Chronicle." Bates had claimed £2OOO damage* from the owner* of the newspaper, the County Chronicle Press. Ltd., of Manurewa. and from its publisher, William Edwin Rack. He alleged the newspaper libelled him by printing an anonymous letter about the felling of some trees In the main street of Raglan in which he was concerned The hearing, which was before Mr Justice Boys, took three days. The jury reached its verdict after a retirement of just over an hour.
