PHOENICIAN PICKED

Handicap At Ellerslie

“The Press” Special Sert-ice < AUCKLAND, June 8. Lochwood. Sabre. Phoenician, Fly Home and Elrey are notable candidates for the third day of tlie Auckland winter meeting tomorrow. Sabre and Lochwood (Steeples) and Elrey and Fly Home (Hurdles) were the Great Northern winners and runners-up. Probably they will again provide some very spirited racing. Lochwood and Sabre are to meet in the McGregor Grant Steeplechase. run over 20 fences, and the last three miles of the Great Northern course Elrey and Fly Home will clash in the Campbell Hurdles, run over two miles, compared with the two and a half miles they ran in the Great Northern Hurdles last Saturday. The T.A.B. double will be the McGregor Grant Steeplechase and the York Handicap of £1250. one mile. For the York Handicap Phoenician, with his great ability in heavy ground, is all the rage. If he runs to form. Phoenician will be too fast for his opponents. the likeliest of which seems to be Even Stevens. Walpari. Simca and Foxskin.

After a further spell of midweek rain the weather has cleared and the prospects are a good deal more favourable than they were earlier. Nevertheless. the ground is bound to be heavy.
