LUNCH-TIME CONCERT

Recital Given By Students

The performers at yesterday afternoon’s concert in the University Hall were students of the college. The onnortunity to perform in public is necessary for students and the music department wisely is providing it. The first item w r as a Quintet in F by Telemann and was played by Helen Colthart (flute), Kerry Thomson (violin). Keith Sayers (oboe). Gavin Abbott (’cello), and Kay Branscombe (harpsichord) The playing was carefully phrased and good atmosphere was created Some very pleasing sounds were heard and the cohesion of olaying was commendable Keith Cutten, accompanied by Joyce Barrell, sang two arias by Mozart and one by Donizetti. He has a very promising voice with too backward a production on many vowels at .present, but when the voice came forward very pleasing resonance was heard. Breath control was good and good legato singing resulted. Miss Barrell’s playing was flexible and created sympathetic atmosphere. Jocelyn Hutton and Margaret Williams played a Dohnanyi Waltz as a duet Well defined rhythm, bright tone, and stylish use of expression, with clear phrasing made their performance an enjoyable one Janet Kenny, accompanied by John Jennings, sang songs by Richard Strauss and Hugo Wolf. She has a powerful voice of very attractive timbre, and should have a future as a singer. At times some high notes needed a little more discipline in production. but the lower part of the voice is very beautiful indeed and she can capture the atmosphere of a song aptly and convincingly John Jennings was a splendid accompanist To end the -ecital he played Chopin’s "Polonaise" in A flat, with excellent command of the keyboard and gave a performance which had dramatic force, rousing vitality, and exemplary clarity and rhythmic control —C.F B
