NO PENALTY ON GORMAN
Deportation Soon (N Z Press Association > WELLINGTON, June 7. “I would like to know where they are deporting me to. sir." Henry Gorman asked Mr R. D. Jamieson. S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court today after being charged with escaping from lawful custody. Gorman, aged 27, escaped yesterday afternoon from a police van taking him to Mt. Crawford prison. The escaped British convict had pleaded guilty in court in the morning to being a prohibited immigrant and his deportation was ordered. His latest escape bid ended with his recapture last night. Today Gorman appeared in court handcuffed to a constable and without the light fawn sports jacket he wore when he appeared yesterday When he was charged this morning, Gorman was asked whether he wanted to be tried by a jury or summarily. “I don’t suppose it makes much difference dtes it,” he replied. He then elected to be dealt with immediately and pleaded guilty. Sergeant A. Davey de. scribed Gorman's escape last night and said that arrangements were in train for his deportation as soon as possible. When Gorman asked to where he was being deported, the Magistrate told him that the question did not relate to the charge before him. He said that a charge of escaping from lawful custody usually meant a six to 12 months' prison sentence, but as Gorman was facing deportation, he would take the course of convicting and discharging him.
”1 feel I should no nothing to place impediment or delay in the way of that deportation,” said the Magistrate.
