Road Accidents
Sir, —Many fatal and nearfatal road accidents occur through sheer driving lunacy and the non-observance of the regulations. I find that the most dangerous illegal acts are committed by young drivers, such as (1) wilfully driving against traffic lights; (2) failing to give way to traffic on the right; (3) approaching an intersection at too great a speed; (4) cutting corners and swerving too close in front of another vehicle that he is overtaking; (5) travelling too fast. For the sake of human life it is to be hoped that all traffic authorities will have no mercyon youths who endulge in these insane driving tactics. — Yours, etc., W. J. D H. McFAUL. April 19, 1962.
I Sir, —In view of the large I number of accidi-n’ cases. 16 lin all, one of which was fatal, (that passed through the casualty department on the first night of the Easter holiday period, we wish to put forward a suggestion which may cause some motorists to have second thoughts. We are two accident patients in the Christchurch Hospital orthopaedic ward, and are always seeing the dreadful results of accidents being admitted to the ward It has had a distinctly sobering affect on our attitude towards driving. We feel that if all intending holiday motorists could be shown through this ward they would certainly hesitate before trying to overtake at the wrong time and would decline that offer of “one more for the road Yours, etc.. TWO EX-MOTOR-CYCLISTS. April 20, 1962.
