Cuningham House

Sir, —We are two quiet, peaceable, nature-loving lads who like to get away from the mad rush of the city at lunch hours. And so we decided we would visit the beautiful Cuningham House we had heard so much about. But alas, between 12 noon and 1 p.m. (lunchtime) it was shut. We saw that on Sundays the hothouse was open only from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It seems a shame that this magnificent glasshouse should be closed when people are free and open when they are working.—Yours, etc., P. CALCOTT, D. DONOVAN.

April 10, 1962. ["lt has seldom been necessary to deny anyone, on request, the opportunity of viewing and studying the comprehensive collection of indoor plants,” said Mr H. G. Gilpin, Director of Reserves. “There are a number of reasons for the restriction of the hours, the main ones being, first, that watering and general maintenance such as fumigating must be carried out regularly with as little inconvenience as possible to the public, and second, that during the hours when a member of the staff is not on duty and the houses are open, there has always been much vandalism and theft of plants. By reorganising the staff it is intended to open the houses during the lunch hour.”]
