Building permits issued for new houses in the Waimairi county in March had dropped Substantially compared with the figure for March last year, it was reported at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council. There were 52 permits issued, valued at £167,202, compared with 91 permits, valued at £276,830, in March last year. The average cost a house this year was £3211, compared with £3042 last year.
Fendalton Riding.—The splitting of the Fendalton riding into two ridings would be deferred, it was decided, .until a full report by the County Clerk (Mr K. Maclachlan) setting out the proposed subdivision of the two ridings, the effect of such subdivision on rates in each part, and matters of population and capital value of each part, is considered at a special meeting. New Service Station.— An application by E. C. Britnell, Ltd., to build a service station on a vacant section at the north-west corner of Avonhead and Yaldhurst roads was approved as a conditional use in a residential zone, the conditions to be fixed when an application for a building permit is received. Three objections against the proposal were received, on the grounds of noise nuisance, danger to young children attending the Avonhead School, disruption of traffic and detrimental effect on the value of residential property. Water For Burwood. — A report on installing a highpressure water supply in the Burwood area will be brought down by the council’s water engineer. There were 158 residences in the Marshland riding, and 14 in •the Styx riding, without high-pressure water, said Cr J W. Green, who raised the matter.
Sewerage Priorities. — The Christchurch Drainage Board advised the council of its agreement to give higher sewerage reticulation priorities within the Northcote area to those streets where sullage flows into the gutters
Winters Road Bridge.— As the Horners drain bridge on Winters road was becoming unsafe for traffic, reconstruction of the bridge would soon be carried out. the Christchurch Drainage Board advised. The Council decided to ask that temporary traffic access be provided while the work is being done. Building at Domain.— The council appointed one Of its building inspectors. Mr W Amos, as a liaison officer to the Shamrock Football Club in connexion with a proposed building for the club at the Riccarton Domain. Site for Piunket Rooms.— The Russley sub-branch of the Piunket Society" was granted a site for rooms in the south-west Corner of the Pinehurst crescent reserve.
