YACHTING J. Oliver’s Spectre Wins First Regatta Race

More thj n 40 boats sailed yesterday in the opening event of the

Waimakariri Easter re-

gatta which has drawn entries from many visitors, some as far afield a-s Dunedin. The recently - introduced OK dinghies held top positions in the fleet for much of tibe three-lap course and the race was won by the Christchurch craft, Spectre, sailed by J. Oliver. Oliver had two minutes’ start on his younger brother, G. Oliver —who also sailed one of the monotypes—but did not concede a second. It was the day of the monotypes 11 Olympic Finns and five OK’s making an impressive sight on the river with tiheir smooch lines and bright sails.

Sailed Steady Race The Pleasant Point skipper, D. Nixon, sailed a steady race w lead the Finn class to the line. The conditions were not hard by any means and with his weight, his advantage of 6o seconds over G. D. Hobson (Waimakariri) at the end was meritorious.

Last year’s Finn champion, R. A. Bargrove, crossed the line 25 seconds astern of Hobson, but withdrew from the race after having reported hitting a buoy. Seven R Class yachts and five Cherubs were among the fleet. The first two-man boat home was D. Mclntosh's Cherub Vicky from Stewart’s Gully Some of the R Class entry sailed with scratch crews: among

them, C. Papps’s Freeway was sailed by R. Davies and M. Robertson.

Dayies, who had his own boat last season and who has been crewing sporadically this summer. obviously welcomed his return to the helm, and his showing was workmanlike. For Robertson, the race in for’ard hand’s position was something of a change after having been skippering the Mount Pleasant Junior Cherub champion boat, Tremelo. Baclonarker First The first R Class dinghy to finish was the backmarker, G J. Cooke’s Fantastic, of the Waimakariri Sailing Club. With no competition to speak of Fantastic had the event well in hand and will probably take the class title this week-end. The regatta will continue today with championship events in Finn, R Class, Cherub, OK and P Class yachts and an open handicap event for catamarans. Results. showing corrected handicaps and finishing times, were:—
