AUCKLAND, April 5. An Auckland architect. Mr S. E. Patten, and an intruder wiio was seated in the new car belonging to Mrs Patten, had a brief but violent struggle in Penrose at 2.30 am. today. The intruder, who had the engine of the car running, rained vicious blows on Mr Patten's shoulders and chest witti an unlighted torch as he tried to poll him out of the car.

While this was going on, Mrs Patten tried to call the police, but could not get dialling tone.

The intruder finally lunged out of liie passenger’s doo? and after crashing over a plank Mr Patten had jammed in the garage entrance, ran off into toe night. Police cars arrived minutes after Mrs Patten managed to get her can through.
