Marwon Impressive In Trentham Run

“The Press" Special Service

WEUUtNGTON, Mar. 6. Marwon and Conference were the moat impreaaive triaUeto at Trentham this morning for the Autumn Handicap, the firat leg at the double on the opening day at the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. Marwon recorded the best time tor a mile during the morning and Conference pleased when hp shaded Prince Argon, Straight Time and Gay Gavotte at the end of a good seven furlongs. Over shorter distances Don Palatine was outstanding when he accounted for Winipeg n over bait- a mile, and Sand Boy excelled over three furlongs. Other first-class sprints were credited to Gold Chick. Expedite. El Baruk, Fair Merit, Almazs and Nelita. Rochdale left no doubt about his fitness for the North Island Challenge Stakes when he shaded Texarkana at the end of six furlongs. His most serious rival. Lord Sasanof, also did well over six furlongs. The Thompson Handicap runner. Sir Henry, ran five furlongs with a lot in hand, but nevertheless recorded excellent time. Galloping took place on the outside of the course proper, which was easy, more so in the straight, but toe conditions did not prevent fast times being recorded. Marwon (Grylls) was doing better than Lavish Countess (Leggett) at the end of a mile in Imin 44 2-ssec. The final half took 51 3-ssec and the last four furlongs 37 3-ssec. Marwon finished full of running and showed no signs of exertion when he pulled up. Easy Run Conference (Edge), Prince Argon (Cullen) and Straight Time (Cameron) ran from

the nine furlongs to the seven easily. They joined Gay Gavotte and the pace increased. They came from there in Imin 32 2-seec. the last half-mile taking 52sec and the final three furlongs 38sec. Conference was shading Straight Time at the finish, with a length to Prince Argon and two lengths to Gay Gavotte. Conference is a lightlyfleshed gelding, but he looks In better order than he did at Trentham in the summer, when he failed to reproduce his effort for third in the Auckland Cup. He should be a dangerous light-weight in the Autumn Handicap. Prince Argon does not appear to have regained his best He was second In the Autumn Handicap last year, but has had only two starts since returning from an Australian campaign and may require more racing. For a hack Gay Gavotte was not disgraced. She appeared to have trouble with the going, and if the track dries out could be a prospect in the Tinakori Hack Handicap. She is a laststart winner, at the Waikato meeting a fortnight ago. Down the six furlongs toute Don Palatine (Cameron) was helf a length in front of Winnipeg II (Edge) at toe end of half a mile in 48 l-ssec, easily the best sprint of the morning. Little Luck Don Palatine has been racing honestly without the best of luck. He could get a reward in toe Railway Handicap if he reproduces this morning’s training effort. Winnipeg H appeared to loaf. She showed much promise in Australia and gave a taste of her ability when she won over seven furlongs at the Franklin meeting last week. On the course proper Sand Boy (Veitch) showed brilliance to run three furlongs in 34sec. He does well when fresh and should be prominent in the Plunket Nursery Handicap. Gold Chick (Andrews) could have beaten Dacron (Cullen) by more than threequarters of a length at the end of half a mile in 49 l-ssec. He ran the final three furlongs in 36 3-ssec. Gold Chick has been a model of consistency and should be hard to beat in toe Plunket Nursery Handicap. Dacron will come into favour for the same event if the ground becomes heavier. Expedite (Campbell) and El Baruk (Sturch) were together over half a mile in 49 3-ssec, taking 35 4-ssec for the final three furlongs. Nelita (Leggett) was clear of High Mark (Grylls) after running half a mile In 50 l-ssec. the final three furlongs taking 36 3-ssec Nelita was disappointing at the Egmont meeting, but her condition cannot be faulted. With 8-2 she eould prove troublesome to many of those above her in the weights In the Tinakori Hack Handicap. Fair Merit (Leggett) sprinted half a mile in 49 3-s*ec, coming from the three furlongs in 36 2-ssec. He has no recent torm. but has raced creditably at Trentham previously. He looks in the right order to do so again. Almaza (Cullen) was slightly ahead of Bargoed (Cameron) with Cracksman (Hart) close up next after running the last four of five furlongs in 50 l-Seec The final three furlongs took 37sec. Cracksman lost ground In the first furlong and conceded his partners a big start with two furlongs to run but was closing in rapidly In the final halffurlong. He should add to his status during the Wellington meeting, especially tn the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes on the second day. Rochdale (Grylls) was doing much better than Texarkana (Andrews) after running six furlongs In imin 18sec coming from the half-mile in 50 2-ssec. and' from the three furlongs in 37 2-Seec. Rochdale travelled comfortably throughout. He has freshened well since the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui, and It will take a very good performance to beat him In the North Island Challenge Stakes Lord Sasanof (Wyatt) was a length tn front of Catania (Edge) at the end of six furlongs tn Imin 19sec, the last four in Msec and the final three tn 30sec. Lord Sasanof looks brighter in the coat than he did when at Trentham in January. Under a hold. Sir Henry (Grylls) left the last four of five furlongs behind tn 51 sec. coming from the three furiongs In 37 2-ssec. He had good form at the summer meeting st Trentham. The best seven furlongs was by Otematata (Edge), which was a length ahead of To Reign (Grylls) at the end of the distance in Imin 31 3-ssec. The final three furlongs were run in 37 4-Seec.
