BOARDS’ VIEW

Letter To Govt. <Tt z. Press Auoetatian) WELLINGTON. March 8. The attitude of the producer boards to the Government’s announcement of the establishment of a Trade Promotion Council was defined today, on behalf of the boards, by Mr J. D. Ormond, chairman of the Meat Board. In his statement, Mr Ormond said: “The joint committee of the statutory boards Dairy, Honey, Meat. Apple and Pear and Wool of which I am the present chairman, has given the matter of the Trade Promotion Council great consideration. “Arising from this, and with the unanimous approval of the statutory boards, our attitude was that we would offer co-operation to the Government in all matters where we could be of assistance, and our position was fully set out in the letter conveyed to the Prime Minister on Wednesday last by the chairmen of the boards. “The substance of this letter was: “ ‘Each board has its own statutory responsibilities in relation to the development of marketing and these responsibilities, due both to their industries and to the Government, cannot be shed to anyone else. It was decided, therefore, that to appoint direct representatives to the Trade Promotion Council would

cut across the present functioning of the statutory board's organisation on

overseas trade, whilst not in the opinion of the meeting creating a satisfactory body in its place in the shape of a reorganised trade promotion council. “ ‘The combined boards will continue to offer their full co-operation to the Government in all matters where they can be of assistance.

“ ‘Perhaps in the years to come, when the development of the present proposed Trade Promotion Council has had time to settle down further, thought can be given to any methods of strengthening the actual operation and the advisory work of that body alongside the work of the joint statutory organisations’."
