U.S. TOURIST SPENDING
Closed Shops In N.Z. Many American tourists took dollars back to the United States because they could not spend them in New Zealand—the shops were closed, said Mr L. Stevens, a travel agent from the United States and a tour director of a party of 79 visiting American cattle ranchers. Americans were permitted to take dollars out of the United States, and they were willing to bring them and spend them, Mr Stevens said. He felt the shopping hours were one of the major factors why more dollars were not spent by such tourists in New Zealand cities. It was to be hoped that New Zealand would follow the lead of some of its northern neighbours in turning its tourist industry into a goldmine.
“New Zealand is a quietly spectacular country which deserves more than one visit,” Mr Stevens said. “It seems too bad that New Zealand does not seem about to take advantage of its position.”
