DROPS IN IMPORTS

Less Cargo For Lyttelton The drop in imports has been reflected in the trade of Lyttelton, which up to January had held up remarkably well. Figures given to the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday showed that last month imports were 51,635 tons, compared with 99,200 tons in February, 1961. Exports also dropped—--33,698 tons compared with 38,389 last year. Cargo handled at the port since the beginning of the board’s financial year in October now amounts to 599,343 tons, compared with 607,349 tons 12 months ago. Although less cargo was handled, more shipping used the port—lls ships with a total tonnage of 291,545, compared with 88 with a tonnage of 273,146. Coastal shipping made up the bulk of the increase—7s ships compared with 49. There were 35 overseas vessels in the port, against 31 in February, 1961.
