TENNIS Sectional Play In Tournament Doubles

The annual Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-associa-tions' championships will have one notable change when they are held at Wilding Park next month—each doubles class will be divided into sections.

The system is one which has been used for several years with the national BP tournament for juniors and it has also been used at times in the Canterbury junior championships when the entries for a certain class have been low.

However, it is intended that all doubles classes at the sub-associations’ championships will be played on this basis whether the entries are good or bad. Each pair in a section will play each of the other pairs in that section and the winners will go on to quarter-finals, semifinals or final, depending on the number of entries and the size of sections.

The intention of the tubassociations' tournament committee la to give the average player in doublet the chance of more than one match. Some may wish to enter in doublet only and tome have to travel long dit-

tances for this tournament to the prospect of one match only is not attractive. Playing the doubles in teetions will give pairs two or more games depending on the tize of sections. There are six doublet classes at the championship*

—men’s, women’s and mixed, and boys', girl*’ and junior mixed. In the sectional play matches will be to the best of 17 games Entries for the tournament will elose on February 23. It is expected to be held at the week-ends of March 10 and 11, and March 17 and 16 and on further week-end* if necessary. The sub-artociations—Mid-Canterbury. Ellesmere, Banks Peninsula. Malvern. North Canterbury, and Hurunui—first held the tournament in 1958 so these will be th* fifth annual championship*. They have always been held at Wilding Park because of the number of court* available and because it is centra! for country players. For the first two tournaments the entries were outstanding, but they have dropped a little in the last two years. It is honed the doubles change wll bring them up again. The tournament h's al«o served as a basis for the selection of Country senior and junior representative teams to play against Town in an annual fixture.
