72 Players In Field

Seventy-two top professional golfers from 13 countries will participate in the 28 075 Malayan dollars (about £4237 sterling) Singapore open golf championship which starts here on Thursday. The four-day tournament, which will be held at the 6757-yard par-73 Royal Singapore Golf Club, will see in action players from Australia. New Zealand, Britain. Japan, South Korea, the United States. Canada. Indonesia. the Philippines. Sweden, South Africa. Formosa Malaya and Singapore Most club officials and golf enthusiasts here expect the existing course record of 69 to be broken during the 72hole competi’ion to be played in four rounds.

The open championship will be preceded by an international two-man team competition tomorrow for the Chivas Trophy and 6000 Malayan dollars in prize money.

Golf officials here predict that the Australians, with a crack field of 20 top flight golfers led bv P Thomson. K D G. Nagle and F Phillips (the holders) will sweep the board.
