CANTERBURY TEAM

Inaugural S.I. Tournament

A strong team has been chosen to represent Canterbury in the inaugural South Island inter-provincial golf tournament at Balmacewen Dunedin, on March 3 and 4 Only one of the eight players named has not taken part in Freyberg Rose Bowl matches. The tournament will be, in effect, a miniature Freyberg Rose Bowl contest Teams taking part this year will be Otago, Southland Mid-South Canterbury, and Canterbury, each team playing the other three All the matches will be singles over 18 holes

The top player and captain of the Canterbury team will be R C. Murray, who has been in magnificent form. After some fine displays with the New Zealand team in Australia, he set a course record at Shirley last month with a six-under-scratch 67.

The team, in playing order, is:—R C. Murray (Russley), C. W. Caldwell (Christchurch). K D. Foxton (Russley), A. W. Robinson (Christchurch), R. E. Clements (Waitikiri),- D. F. Williamson (Christchurch), J. G Scott (Christchurch), I. B. Cromb (Kaiapoi).

The tournament will mark the return to big golf of Caldwell, who was prevented from playing for much of last year by illness. He is a former Canterbury Freyberg Rose Bowl captain and was a semi-finalist for the New Zealand amateur championships m 1960. Good perfo. .nances in the tournament could enhance players’ chances in gaining selection in the team for the Rose Bowl contest, which will also be held at Balmacewen this year. The Canterbury selectors (Messrs C. J. Ward and J. O’Gorman) will be following form closely.
