FIRE BRIGADE LADDER

Union Protest On Safety

A turntable extension ladder had not bean used for two years, and it would not be used operationally except as a water tower with a limit of 35ft, the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) told the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board. The board received a letter from the Firemen’s Union urging that the ladder should not be used, as members considered it unsafe. There was deterioration in the timber structure of the ladder, Mr Osmond said. He had intended to recommend to the estimates meeting that the ladder should be disposed of. "Get rid of it," he said. It would be a waste of time to carry out training on the ladder, he added. The men apparently feared that the ladder would be called out in an emergency, said the chairman (Mr W. R. Campbell).
