SECOND BRIDGE

Auckland’s Plans

(NX. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 14.

The first steps to determine where and when Auckland's second harbour bridge would be built were now being taken. Sir John Allum, the Bridge Authority chairman, told today's meeting. “There is no need to panic, but there is no time to lose," he said. The work would be progressive and steady and a long job. If the traffic figure estimates were correct, the need for the next bridge was not far off. Present trends indicated that maximum loading on the bridge might be reached within nine years, but a new bridge would take five years to build.

Less than three years after the opening of the bridge, daily traffic peaks touched 23,000 vehicles, which was slightly less than the maximum rating the Royal Commission fixed at 26,800 for a four-line highway.
