January 29 Victoria’s clumnion three-year-old, New Statesman, returned to racing will a brilliant win in the William Reid Stokes at Moonee Valley to-da-v New Statesman, which was having his first start since he won the Victoria Derbyin the spring, had the race won for the last two furlongs
New Statesman and his jockey. J. Purtell, rece’ved a remarkable reception from the crowd as they returned to scale.
New Statesman storied equal favourite at s'l. and won by a neck from the South Australian sprinter. Kelvm Valley (6/1) while ‘he former New Zealand horse. Aly Khan, the other equal favourite, was a length away third A'feature of the betting or. the race was a pl'mge on Aly Khan, which firmed from 14'1, to start equal favourite. New States. ian proved himself the outstanding colt last spring when he led all the way to win the Victoria Derby His win today showed he has returned to that form, and it now appears as though he could be Victoria's champion horse of the autumn. The trainer. B Courtney said after the race that New Statesman's main mission for the autumn was the A.J.C £lO.OOO Invitation Cup. of a mile and a half, at Randwick <pn April 14.
