Shooting Of Game
Sir, —As a frequent visitor to your lovely country I am constantly reminded that the act of killing wild life is deemed pleasureably interesting news to most New Zealanders. Somehow I do not believe this. You are too kindly and friendly a people to find pleasure in the actual taking of life and I feel that there must be very many New Zealanders to whom this type of news must be repellant. It may, and I repeat may, be necessary to exterminate your beautiful deer, but why boast of the actual killing? I feel impelled to write this letter by a, to me, particularly repellant item of news about an American party who are apparently rampaging around the world on a sadistic killing expedition. The leader actually boasts that at least six poor miserable native beaters, forced by economic circumstances to do the dangerous work for him have been killed. Mr Birch hastens to add that none of his party have been harmed in any way.—Yours, etc., . . EOGUE ATKINSON. January 17, 1962.
