Up Or Out?
Sir. —The comment by Mr M. B. Hayes, assistant town clerk, on the letter from "Anti-Regimentation” cannot go unchallenged. He says: “The council wishes to proceed with a major housing reclamation scheme to improve the area and has made what are considered fair offers for the properties needed.” The implications of this statement have no foundation in ethical qualification, or economic advantage to the citizens, as many know. Cr. M. R, Carter, chairman of the reclamation committee, or his associates, cannot justify their actions in attempting to put houseowners out of their homes in the manner that has been adapted, and at the prices offered. To designate the reclamation area .as wholly a slum would be a slanderous untruth. The responsible councillors or their planners and officers have refused private enterprise the right to improve the area, they have allowed the property which they have already purchased to degenerate instead of carrying out their stated purpose to "improve" the area. —Yours, etc.. JUSTITIA. January 16. 1962.
