CARDIGAN BAY

No Trip To Perth

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, January 8.

Cardigan Bay will be scratched from the interDominion championships which open at Perth next month

Mrs A. D. Dean, who bought Cardigan Bay for £2OOO last June, said today that this decision had not been influenced by the horse’s recent defeats in the Champion Handicap at Alexandra Park and last Saturday’s New Year Handicap at Cambridge. "The main reason.” she said, "was the inability of the trainer, P. T, Wolfenden, to spare so much time away from his large team.” Cardigan Bay’s main mission now will be the New Zealand Trotting Cup, but there is a chance that he may contest the rich Lord Mayor’s Cup at Harold Park, Sydney, in March.

The veteran pacer Canyon, which is trained at Kumeu, about 20 miles north of Auckland, will definitely make the trip to Perth. The owner-trainer, A. B. Levy, who will accompany the horse, said at the weekend that Canyon had thrived recently, although unplaced in five starts.
