TROTTING J. A. Carmichael Has Had Change Of Luck

The Templeton trainer-driver, J. A. Carmichael, has had a welcome change of luck in the last six weeks during which he has had 12 winning drives, three of them being with members of his own team.

Carmichael was particularly successful at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting last week, driving five winners, two of which he trained himself.

Carmichael was for many years associated with W. R. Butt at Templeton and while with him he drove a number of winners both at country and metropolitan meetings. He set up as a public trainer several seasons ago, but wins for him were few and far between until the last month or two.

Four of Carmichael’s wins since the beginning of December have been with the Gore-trained mare, Va Vite, which will race next in the Dunedin Festival Cup, which starts on January 27. Carmichael won twice with her at Hutt Park, once at New Brighton and once at Addington. Gold Globe, which was unplaced in her first start for him, won the Reefton Cup and toe Greymouth Cup for him. The Johnny Globe mare showed considerable promise when first she was produced, one of her best efforts being a second to Robin Dundee in the New Zealand Oaks in December, 1960. Gold Globe showed on the West Coast that she is well endowed with stamina and Carmichael should have little difficulty placing her to advantage again in the next few months. Carmichael’s other win with a member of his own team was with Terako Queen in the Paparoa Handicap on the first day of toe Greymouth meeting. Terako Queen has always shown plenty of ability, but unfortunately she has been far from reliable in many of her races. If Carmichael can make her race solidly, she should be capable of further wins for Mr T. C. Dickson, Won With Trotters Carmichael went close to winning all four races for trotters at the Greymouth meeting. He drove Astralight to win the Summer Handicap on the first day and Medieval to win both races for trotters last Saturday, In the other race for trotters he was second with Medieval behind Lady Verna in the Gladstone Handicap last Thursday. Carmichael’s other two winning drives since toe start of last month were at Hutt Park where he was successful behind Pohutukawa and Lucks Way. Like most young trainers, Carmichael has found it difficult to build up a capabte team of pacers and trotters.

His successes during the last six weeks suggest that he will have plenty of horses offered to him.

His team at present includes the trotters, Coronet Lass and Royal Harmony. Coronet Lass has trotted some sound races against the best company at Addington and she is overdue for a win. Her most recent placing was an unlucky third to When and Estelle in the Hornby Handicap at Addington on January 2. A day earlier she finished third to Dianthus Girl and Reprimand in the Trotters’ Time Trial. Owned In Auckland Lady Verna, which gained a win, a second and two thirds at the Greymouth meeting, is raced by Mr N. Simpson, of Auckland, for whom she is now trained by N. L. Berkett. She is a four-year-old mare by Pilade from Vernaccia, both of which were bred in Italy and imported by Mr Simpson. Smokeaway Smokeaway has been left at Manurewa with K. F. Morrison and he will remain in the north until after toe final night meetings for the season in Auckland on March 10 and 14. Smokeaway failed to show form at the Auckland Cup meeting last month, but a northern report said that he was suffering from toe effects of a cold. First Win W. R. Scott, who recently shifted to Cambridge after training for a time at New Brighton, had his first win when Ideal outclassed his opponents in the Introductory Handicap at the Cam-

bridge meeting on Saturday. Ideal had always shown ability in Canterbury, but he had failed to stay. At Cambridge he was untroubled to win by eight lengths. Scott now races Ideal in partnership with Mrs Scott and, Mrs G. Jervis. For Perth Three highly-regarded New South Wales candidates for the Inter-Dominion Championship series in Perth next month fought out a keen finish to the Harold Park Open Class Handicap last Friday. Amazing Vale, which started at 4 to 1, finished fast to beat Colonel Scott, the favourite at 5 to 4, in the last stride. Last Command, which firmed from 8 to I to 4 to 1, was a short neck away third. Last Command raced in the last championship series at Addington, but failed to show his true Sydney form. Half-Sisters The half-sisters, Vivacis and All Red, had a good run at the Greymouth meeting last week. Vivacis won over two miles on Thursday and she was successful in the second division of the Dobson Handicap on Saturday. All Red failed on the first day, but on Saturday she finished third in the Greymouth Cup and won the Electric Handicap. Vivacis. which is trained by K. Purdon for Mr L. Gibbons, is a five-year-old mare by Medorc from Miranda Scott. All Red is a six-year-old mare by Red Emperor from Miranda Scott. She is raced by her breeder, Mr O. A. Cadwallader, of Greytown, and is trained at Templeton by C. R. Berkett.
