HERCULES STILL STRANDED

Weather Delays Repairs

White-out conditions and adverse weather are delaying repairs to the United States Navy Hercules aircraft which is stranded in the Antarctic. The Hercules landed on New Year’s Day about 300 miles short of its destination when bound for Byrd Station from McMurdo Sound. It was put down safely with only one of its engines on full power. The maintenance team flown out from McMurdo Sound is waiting for the weather to improve before it starts work on the aircraft. Meanwhile the men are sleeping in fully equipped tents and are well protected from the weather. It is thought that the engine trouble might have been caused by ice crystals forming in the fuel jets. This theory has yet to be checked by an examination of the engines.
