NEW WAITOHI VIADUCT

Work To Start In May

The new Waitohi viaduct a mile south of Picton. should be completed by 1963. The £48,000 viaduct was described recently by the District Engineer of the Railways Department (Mr G. Shrimpton), as a ‘‘spectacular construction job.” Pre-stressed concrete mans will be supported as high as 50ft from the bed of the Waitohi stream. The viaduct will be curved, with plain lines, and like the new concrete bridge over the Ashley river, will require little maintenance. Hie contractors. D. and A. J. Caithness, of Christchurch, would probably start work in May, the department’s assistant engineer (Mr J. A. Parsons) said yesterday.
