CALCUTTA, January 4.
India beat England by 187 runs in the fourth cricket test today to go one up in the five-match series. The first three tests were drawn.
E. R. Dexter, England’s captain, went out after adding only four runs to the M.C.C.’s overnight score today. He was lbw to Durani for 62, which put England on the brink of defeat with five down for 129 in its second innings. Dekter was trying a big leg-hit when he was out in Durani’s second over. He batted for two hours for his 62, which included 11 fours. Umrigar, leading the Indian side in the absence of Contractor, persisted with his attacking methods.
Parfitt and Knight set themselves to battle it out, scoring only when the obvious loose ball arrived. There was a long day ahead, but at least they showed a willingness to fight and make India work hard for its victory.
The stand reached 50 in 80 minutes, but Parfitt ran into trouble in the last over before lunch, and was lbw to Umrigar off the fifth ball. The stand of 66 occupied 105 minutes and Parfitt batted 150 minutes for 46 hard-earned runs. Lunch was taken at the fall of the wicket.
