ANTARCTIC FLIGHTS

102 Made Since October

The Hercules aircraft scheduled to leave Christchurch Airport today with fresh vegetables and fruit for McMurdo Sound will be the first flight to the Antarctic since December 20 and the one hundred and third by the American forces since the Antarctic programme resumed last October.

The number of flights is about normal for the period Two years ago more, flights were made, but now greater use is made of ships to deliver supplies because air flights are more expensive. Of the 103 flights two were made by Russian planes now at Mirny.

Seventy flights were made by Globemasters, which carried 700 tons of cargo and some passengers. Twelve flights with 60 tons of cargo were made by Hercules aircraft. Super Constellations carried 840 passengers in 13 flights. Other flights were made by DCS’s (three) and Neptunes (two). On the Antarctic more than 3000 tons of supplies have been taken to inland bases from McMurdo Sound. Much of this has been drums of fuel as well as scientific equipment and building materials. More than 2300 tons of supplies have been taken to Byrd Station and 700 tons to the South Pole Station. Some of this was air dropped and some taken in by ski-equipped Hercules.
