CLOSED BY DROUGHT

Aerodrome At Hawera (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 4. Hawera's aerodrome was closed to commercial air traffic as Taranaki drought conditions worsened today. The airfield will not be open to normal traffic movements until rain falls. Sheep and weeks of hot, dry weather have made the airfield surface unsafe for aircraft. Holes have been caused by sheep grazing the airfield and ditches have sunk. When rain falls again the holes will be filled, the Hawera Aero Club’s chief flying instructor (Mr T. Withey) said. This could not be done at present, because winds would just blow the dry soil out again. Training flights may be made by club aircraft under certain conditions. Mr Withey said, but the aerodrome would be closed to aircraft on commercial flights. The last commercial flight using the airfield was made today by a Tauranga aircraft bringing the body of a Manaia youth, who was drowned at Tauranga. back to Taranaki for burial.
