Transport Board Loss

Sir, —The reported loss of approximately £2250 weekly by the Christchurch Transport Board does not surprise me. The number of persons now using cars to attend work has grown considerably, evidenced in every street within a half-mile radius of the city centre by cars parked for the day. Indeed, there is a shortage of streets, and some are even forced into parking areas. The loss mentioned is recovered by a Transport Beard rate. As a ratepayer in an outlying district, I do not grudge the tax. I know that without transport facilities provided by the board my property I would lose in value. Private I transport and motor-cars are partly responsible for the losses I suggest that money from parking meters be used to offset this loss. The City Council could credit profits from meters to tl.e Transport Board. Robbing Peter to pay Paul perhaps, but buses are a necessary amenity.—Yours, etc., CHAS. E. ALLEN. December 19, 1961.
