Goa

Sir. —There is nothing to be gained by trying to perpetuate any policy based on imperialism. The Portuguese have long overstayed their occupation of the Indian enclaves and common sense should have persuaded them to quit. For refusing to recognise the writing on the wall, Salazar had to be winkled out with Indian bayonets. Portuguese drivel, such as “fighting to the last man and shilling.” do not now impress the ordinary people, who are sick of war and hypocrisy. Negative policies like those of Salazar 'in India and Africa and those lof the French in Algeria are simply just plain stupidity This is the era of the Welfare State and bigger dividends.—Yours. etc.. RALPH S WHEELER Timaru, December 19, 1961 Sir, —The day has come when one nation can subjugate another and the world can do nothing. The West wept to war to protect IndoChina and Korea from "liberation” armies, but allows Nehru to escape with a chiding of bad reputation. India’s action was morally unjustified and highly illegal, no matter how legitimate its complaints, which she has not tabulated or proved. All immediate punitive measures must be taken at once for expulsion from the Commonwealth. India now has no reason to complain of Chinese "decolonising” aggression on her own territories. but has the dubious reputation of Communist support in her unjust aggression against a defenceless colony.—Yours, etc.. AM. December 18. 1961. Sir. —Should not all aid we now give to India be stopped? —Yours, etc., PEACE ON EARTH. I December 19, 1961.
