“WE’RE NOT WEALTHY”

Not Much More Than Million (IV .Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Dec. 20. Among the 200-odd passengers that arrived in the Mariposa from Sydney today were many Americans. A reporter struck up conversation with one, a woman, while travelling in the ship’s lift. It went something like this: Woman (in a slow drawl); “You’re a reporter I see. I hope you don’t write anything like those Australian newsmen did.” Reporter: "What was it they wrote?” Woman (casting reporter with a hard look); “Well they said the ship was full of wealthy Americans when it left Sydney.” Reporter: “Well what was wrong with that?” Woman (becoming excited': "We aren’t wealthy people at all—most of us don't have much more than one million dollars each.”
