Dingaan’s Day

December 16 is kept as a public holiday in South Africa to commemorate the defeat of the Zulu king Dingaan by the Boers under Pretorius at Blood River in 1838. This led to the establishment of the first (short-lived) trek - Boer republic. Originally known as Dingaan’s Day, it has recently been renamed the Day of the Covenant.
