PRETORIA, Dec. 16. A fine spell ot bowling by the off-apinner M. Seymour, who took seven for 80, helped to dismiss the New Zealand cricketers for 228 in the first innings on the opening day of the match against South African Universities here yesterday. The New Zealanders started well with Dowling (44) and Barton (42) scoring 74 in the biggest opening stand of the tour in 97 minutes. Later Yuile hit a fine 63, and when the New Zealanders at one stage were 188 for three, a big score seemed possible. But when Yuile was caught off a lofted drive into the covers the innings folded badly and seven wickets fell for the addition of only 40 runs. The student openers, B. J. Versfeld (42) and M. A. Menter (48), took the score to 94 without loss at the end of the first day. Damp Spot Seymour bowled unchanged for more than three hours and took five of the last seven wickets to fall. He was able to turn the ball on a damp spot on the pitch where a little moisture had seeped through after the rains last night. Dowling and Barton batted confidently but started slowly and were in trouble against the opening bowlers Rushmere and Freeman. Barton, the faster scorer of the two. made 42 with three fours and one six in 97 minutes. He drove powerfully through the covers and was out in an unfortunate manner when he stepped on the wicket after hitting Seymour through mid-wicket for four runs. Dowling’s innings lasted 139 minutes with three boundaries. He played the pace bowling well but was in trouble against Seymour. Nine minutes after lunch
Seymour trapped him legbefore trying to pull him round the leg side. Yuile scored all round the wicket and drove forcefully. He never looked worried by anything the attack could offer until he succumbed to temptation to hit a fourth successive boundary off Hall. Not Encouraging Murray Chapple, captain in the absence of John Reid, was batting well when he popped a catch off Seymour which was brilliantly held by Nick Frangos. The rest erf the New Zealand batting did not impress,
and with the second test only II days away their performance, after a great start, was far from encouraging. When Menter and Versfeld got their eyes in in the students’ first knock Chapple tried quick bowling changes to separate them but this did not work. The New Zealand pace bowlers Bartlett, Cameron and Motz were unable to get help from the pitch. Today is a religious public holiday here. The match continues on Monday. Scores:— NEW ZEALAND
