TWO LINERS WITHDRAWN
Orontes And Strathnaver (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, December 12. Two P. and 0.-Orient liners will be withdrawn- from the United Kingdom-Australia run several months earlier than planned next year. The ships are the line’s oldest vessels, the Orontes and Strathnaver. They will be sold for scrap. The Orontes will now leave Sydney for the last time on January 12, and the Strathnaver on January 17. Several trips planned for the liners have now been cancelled. A spokesman for P. and 0.Orient Lines said in Sydney yesterday that every effort would be made to offer passengers for these trips alternative accommodation. An Easter cruise from Sydney on April 19. planned for the Strathnaver, would also be cancelled. An alternative trip would be made available to some passengers in the Orion, which would sail from Sydney two weeks later for two ports in New Zealand, returning to Sydney by way of Brisbane. The two liners had been withdrawn earlier because of the Commonwealth Government’s decision not to take up a large number of berths provisionally reserved for British migrants for the first five months of next year, the spokesman said.
