UNIVERSITY LANDS

Areas Vested In Crown

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 17. Certain back-country endowment lands vested in the Canterbury University are declared Crown lands in the Reserves and Other Lands Disposal Bill introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday. The areas comprise Lake Grassmere, Sarah. Pearson, Marymere. and Hawdon, with strips about a chain wide round the parts of these lakes within the reserve. The areas were set apart in 1873 as an endowment to promote superior education. Probably by oversight, the lakes and surrounding strips were not reserved therefrom. The university leases the reserves to three separate runholders. The lakes are stocked with fish and provide bathing and other recreation. Lake Grassmere has been declared a wild life refuge under the Wild Life Act. It has therefore been considered appropriate to revest the areas in the Crown for the enjoyment and recreation of the people. The university has agreed to this without compensation and the lessees of the three runs have also agreed without compensation for adjustment of rentals.
