JUNIOR TEAMS
Early Shield Matches
Teams to contest the Slazenger Shield junior boys’ contest and the Howe Shield girls’ matches have been announced by the Canterbury Junior Lawn Tennis Association as follows: Boys.—G. G. Ford, L. W. Watkins, R. McCutcheon, A. Brooks. Reserve: R. G. Hastie. Girls.-—D. Smith, H. Bruce. C. Andrew, S. Mac Neill. Reserve: L. Ashby. S. Rich was not available for the first engagement. There are 18 entries for each of the competitions from throughout New Zealand, divided into four zones. Zone 1 has Auckland, Northland, North Shore and Waikato; zone 2 is Wanganui, Bay of Plenty, Manawatu and Taranaki; zone 3 is Nelson, Marlborough. Wellington, Hutt Valley, Wairarapa; zone 4 is West Coast, Canterbury, North Otago, Otago and South Canterbury. Because of the five teams in Canterbury’s zone it is necessary to play elimination matches before the zone matches. These will be played on Saturday, October 25, when the Canterbury boys will meet West Coast at Greymouth and the Canterbury girls will play West Coast at Wilding Park. The zone matches proper will be held for the boys at Oamaru and the girls at Timaru, probably on December 2 and 3. If the Canterbury teams win their matches against West Coast they will meet the North Otago boys’ and girls’ teams on the first day. In the semi-finals of the two competitions to be played at Auckland this year in conjunction with the national junior championships in January, the winners of zone 4 will play the zone 1 winners, and zone 2 will meet zone 3.
