EXPLOSION IN DC-6
No Comment By Officers (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 14. Royal New Zealand Air Force officers have refused to comment on the muffled explosion which occurred in an Air Force DC-6 on the way to Singapore on Thursday. The aircraft arrived back in Auckland today with 54 soldiers and their dependants on board. It was piloted on the last leg from Brisbane by Squadron Leader G. H. S. Toeland, officer commanding 40 Squadron at Whenuapal and a former officer commanding 41 (Bristol Freighter) Squadron at Singapore. When the plane arrived at Wibeniuapai, Squadron Leader Tesla nd declined to discuss the explosion. A passenger in the aircraft today was a Tasman Empire Airways, Ltd., engineer, Mr J Harding, who flew to Darwin on Friday to examine the plane. He, too, refused to comment.
The officer in charge of the technical wing at Whenuapai, Squadron Leader J. D Hurley, said Mr Harding checked the aircraft at Darwin and did a test flight. The plane then went on to Singapore and returned to New Zealand without further trouble. Squadron Leader Hurley said he was not in a position to say more.
