SITE FOR MILL
26 Acres On North Road
The proposed site of Forest Products Ltd.’s paper mill is east of the milk powder factory on the Main North road, north of the Waimakariri bridge. The site, of 26 acres, is on a Railways Department reserve on the north bank of the Waimakariri between the new railway bridge and the old bridge. The company will become lessees of the land on January 1, 1962. The site can be added to. The company has approached the North Canterbury Catchment Board about the possibility of buying some of the board’s land adjoining the railway reserve, but no negotiations have been entered into yet.
“As a paper mill the project will no doubt be of industrial benefit to Kaiapoi. but it will not offer any utilisation of Canterbury forests,” said Mr E. A. Cooney, of the Selwyn Plantation Board, last night, “The project will not become of benefit to Canterbury as a whole until the paper produced comes from pulp from Canterbury timber.”
