ARMY LIFE IN MALAYA

Corporal, Wife Approve

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 14. A Maori corporal and his wife arrived in Auckland from Malaya today after two years abroad and said: “We’d like to go back.” They are Corporal D. Huia, aged 29, of Wanganui, and &£j Su £ <>pean Barbara. With them wae their son, David, aged 10 months. Corporal Huia and his wife liked the life in the East, where married soldiers are provided with modem, furnished houses, the rentals of which are heavily subsidised by the Army. They also liked having an amah—a Chinese maid-of-all-work—supplied by the Army free of charge to do the washing, cleaning and cooking for each New Zealand wife.

Other little perquisites—the Army pays the electricity bill and for the services of a gardener—made life enjoyable. In Malaya and Singapore, cars, watches, toys, radios and men’s clothing cost only half as much as in New Zealand.
