Plane Damaged In Landing
A United States Navy skiequipped Dakota was damaged while landing a threeman scientific field party in the Sentinel mountain range of Ellsworth Land on Sunday. None of the eight men aboard the aircraft was injured.
The accident occurred when the Dakota, operating from Byrd station, about 450 miles away, struck high, hard sastrugi as it landed. The starboard landing gear collapsed, throwing the aircraft on to its wing, which was damaged.
Immediately news of the mishap reached Byrd station a Dakota set out to pick up the eight men, but bad weather in the area forced it to return. Another Dakota set out yesterday for the crippled aircraft The field camp was being established by three field investigators from the University of Minnesoi. who are to conduct bedrock geological investigations in the Sentinel range. They are Messrs J. J. Anderson, T. W. Bastien, and P. G. Schmidt. .No fears for the men’s safety are felt as each aircraft flying on a mission carries emergency supplies.
