Approaching the half-mile, Aquanita was still a long way back and Hutchinson had to take him around the outside of the field to be about ten wide rounding the home turn. Even at that stage it was obvious that Aquartfta had the race in his keeping. Aquanita finished brilliantly down the outside and was going away at the finish. The favourite Mardene, which was sold about half an hour before the race to Sydney interests. showed a great deal of pace to be second behind Gay Ebon to the two furlongs post but weakened in the straight to fifth. The Sydney trainer. C. Ryan, acting for the Sydney owners. Mir and Mrs R. P. De La Salla and Mr and Mrs N. R. Rodgers, bought M-ardene 25 minutes before the offiri-ad starting time of the race. It u-as also fairly close to the Australian record of 2min 26 9-10 sec. m-ade by Tulloch in his Caulfield Cup win in 1957. Going along the back of the course. Lord Fury appeared to nave an unbeatable lead 15 lengths in front of Dhaulagiri, which was followed by Nilarco. with the former New Zealand stayer. Rural Loch, last. Lord Fury *til! had a clear lead nearing the home turn, but shortly afterwards Dnaulagiri started to move up and it was soon apparent in the straight that he would win. Rural Loch started in the race by a mistake. Original plans had been for him to run in the last race, the V.R.C. Handicap, but his trainer scratched him by mistake and left him in the C. B Fisher Plate. V.R.C. Handicap The South Australian stayer. Baroda Gleam, led all the way to win the V.R.C. Handicap from the favourite. Sparkler.
