CARNIVAL ON AVON

Postponement For Fortnight A strong north-west wind End a high fire hazard caused the river carnival which was to have been staged at Kerr’s Reach on Saturday evening, to be postponed until Saturday. November 25. The Canterbury Public Relations Officer (Mr E. G. Beckett), announcing the postponement, said the present fire danger made it impossible for the brigade to snare men and equipment for their coloured water display. This, in turn, made it too dangerous to hold the fireworks display. The New Brighton Power Boat Club officials responsible for marshalling the float procession felt it would be impossible to handle cumbersome floats in windy condirtons. said Mr Beckett. The men from the fire section at Burnham who had taken part in last year’s carnival were not available to replace the Fire Brigade, he said. However, the committee would approach the Army authorities early in the week for permission for the men. to give a display in conjunction with the Fire Brigade or if fire danger still excluded the brigade’s attendance to lend support in case of incidents. The decision was made by ’he carnival committee on Saturday morning after consultations with the Mayor (Mr G. Manning, the deputyMayor (Mr H. P. Smith), the Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) and the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond).
