Pedestrian Crossings

Sir.—The situation at the

pedestrian zones is worsening to the detriment and risk of pedestrians, because of the blatant infringement by motorists of the road code. Some attention by traffic officers is desirable. I recently followed two traffic officers over a Cathedral square zone and here the situation was illuminating. Approaching motorists halted and stood to attention. In a recent article' in a British paper a Dutch woman who had crossed from Amsterdam to Harwich said how pleasant it was to observe the strict attention the British motorists paid to the zebra crossings. It is deplorable we cannot have the same behaviour here.—Yours, etc, VERB. SAP. October 27, 1961.
