Harewood Bus Service
Sir,—ls there a limit on local body rating? The Transport Board is rating Harewood residents, but the bug does not come within a mile of some of them, and the rates would be exorbitant if buses passed our door. Half the rating year has gone and we see no sign of service. Surely the board should be classed as a sick industry. If the user-pays principle applies to electric power it should also apply to the buses.—Yours, etc., F. E. COWIN. Harewood. September 7. 1961.
’ [The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr J. F. Fardell) said: “There are proposals for subdivision of certain parts ot Harewood, astride Harewood road and beyond the present bus terminus, which, when undertaken, will necessitate the provision of bus services. It is quite natural that the board cannot extend services to every part of the district for the reason observed by the writer, namely, that the cost would be prohibitive. The board’s extended area was only approved at the end of last year, and to provide services requires vehicles Until it is known that a new area will be granted, it would be impolitic to buy vehicles
on the anticipation of such an alteration. Once a new area is in, the necessary vehicles for any major change in operations must be purchased, and these cannot be obtained in a matter of six months. Some new vehicles are now on order to cater for expanding needs,”]
