Fluoridation

Sir,—Further to “Vigilant’s” recent letter, he is “convinced” by Elmer Hess, past president of the American Medical Association, who was in such a wonderful “strategic position.” In fact, Hess was in a most embarrassing spot, because the A.M.A. is resolutely opposed to socialised medicine, or “mass medication” to use a propaganda term. Fluoridation. being “mass medication,” was opposed on principle, but no attempt was made to controvert the evidence in favour of fluoridation, the members, unlike “Vigilant.” having scientific reputations to lose. This explains the -uneasy neither-for-nor-against attitude which is so apparent in the quotation kindly provided by your correspondent. There is a wealth of meaning in Hess’s words, “I am unable to express an opinion.”—Yours, etc.,

J. DUG-DALE. October 5, 1961.
