Transport Board Rate

Sir, —“Fed-up Ratepayer” hits the nail on the head when he says that the board would pay its way too if users were made to pay the cost of running the service. Mr Fardell, in his reply, carefully sidestepped that point. If the other three main centres found it necessary to increase the minimum fare to 5d or 6d. what reason is there for Christchurch neglecting to follow suit? The basic trouble is that the board is not interested in the large sum lost annually. If it was it would take some action to reduce losses.—Yours, etc., REGULAR PASSENGER. August 29, 1961'.

The general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board (Mr j. F. Fardell) replies: “There is no question of sidestepping the matter in ‘Fed-Up Ratepayer’s’ letter. The context of his letter was raised about an entirely different matter, and the question of fare charges was taken to be purely obiter dicta. As later stated in reply to ‘Fed-Up Ratepayer,’ the question of fare charges is a policy matter, decided by the Board, and from time to time the board reviews fare charges and also makes decisions on proposals which are put forward by manage, ment or individual board members.”
